Background of the Study
The integration of educational technology in classrooms has revolutionized teaching and learning processes across various disciplines, particularly in STEM subjects. In Gombe LGA, Gombe State, the adoption of digital tools, interactive software, and online resources is increasingly seen as a pathway to enhance student engagement and improve learning outcomes in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Educational technology facilitates active learning, allowing students to visualize complex concepts, engage in simulations, and access a wealth of information beyond traditional textbooks (Abubakar, 2023). In many schools within Gombe LGA, the introduction of smart boards, digital laboratories, and e-learning platforms has begun to transform the educational landscape. These technological tools offer the potential to create dynamic and interactive learning environments that foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills. However, the effective integration of technology in STEM classrooms is not without challenges. Many schools face infrastructural limitations, such as unreliable electricity and poor internet connectivity, which impede the consistent use of digital resources. Additionally, there is often a significant gap in teachers’ training and their ability to integrate technology effectively into their lesson plans (Lawal, 2024). As a result, the implementation of educational technology varies widely across schools, with some institutions benefiting from state-of-the-art facilities while others struggle with outdated equipment. Furthermore, cultural and administrative resistance to change can also hinder the adoption of innovative teaching methods. Despite these challenges, the potential benefits of technology in enhancing STEM education remain substantial. Recent studies have demonstrated that when properly implemented, educational technology can lead to improved student performance, greater engagement, and enhanced collaborative learning (Lawal, 2024; Musa, 2025). This investigation aims to explore how educational technology is currently used in STEM classrooms in Gombe LGA, identify the barriers to its effective implementation, and propose recommendations for maximizing its benefits. By critically analyzing the current practices and challenges, this study seeks to contribute to the development of strategies that can help educators leverage technology to create more effective and engaging STEM learning environments.
Statement of the Problem (300 words)
Despite the recognized potential of educational technology to transform STEM education, schools in Gombe LGA face numerous challenges that hinder its effective integration. Many classrooms are equipped with digital tools that remain underutilized due to infrastructural deficits such as erratic power supply and limited internet access. In addition, a significant number of teachers lack the requisite training and technical skills to incorporate these technologies into their teaching practices effectively (Abubakar, 2023). This shortfall results in a scenario where modern digital resources are not fully exploited to enhance student understanding of complex STEM concepts. Moreover, there is often a disconnect between the availability of technology and its practical application in the classroom, leading to sporadic and superficial use of digital tools. Administrative and cultural resistance further compound these issues, with some educators and policymakers hesitant to adopt new methods due to fear of change or lack of confidence in the technology. The cumulative effect of these challenges is a digital divide that prevents many students from experiencing the full benefits of interactive and modern STEM education. This study intends to systematically investigate the barriers to the effective use of educational technology in STEM classrooms in Gombe LGA. By identifying the key infrastructural, pedagogical, and administrative challenges, the research will offer actionable recommendations to improve the integration of technology in teaching practices. The ultimate goal is to enhance the quality of STEM education, ensuring that all students have access to engaging and innovative learning opportunities (Lawal, 2024; Musa, 2025).
